About H&R Shepherds

Our journey with German Shepherds began years ago, born from a deep-rooted passion for the breed. As the years progressed, the approach evolved from an enthusiastic novice to a dedicated student of the breed’s health and genetics. After taking an intentional pause to further education, a bachelor’s degree in animal science was earned—a step that fundamentally changed how responsible breeding is viewed. While time was taken to study, foundation lines were carefully preserved through a trusted mentor, ensuring the lineage started with remained secure until the return with the right knowledge and resources.

Today, H&R Shepherds is built on a foundation of transparency, science, and structural integrity. True stewardship of the breed requires more than just passion—it requires data. Every dog in the program undergoes rigorous health screening, including Embark full genetic panels, Orivet testing for pituitary dwarfism, and professional PennHIP and OFA evaluations for hips and elbows. While there was initial nervousness about being the first to test lines that had never been screened, there is immense pride that these dogs have consistently passed these assessments, providing a clear, data-driven understanding necessary to breed with confidence.

The program is dedicated to the traditional German Shepherd, and classic Black and Red lines will always remain a core priority. At the same time, there is excitement to incorporate unique, non-standard colors—including liver, blue, and Isabella—into the breeding program. Focus is currently placed on working with recessive liver and blue gene carriers, carefully selecting for the structural health and temperament that the breed is famous for. Please note that while diversity in colors is celebrated, not every puppy will be a breeding prospect; the commitment is always to the long-term health and wellness of the dogs above all else. It is an honor to share this passion and to help find a well-rounded, healthy companion that meets the high standards of the H&R name.
